Paper recycling solutions: machine that protects your pulper

Keep your paper recycling line moving. From the first bale to the pulper.

Paper mills using recycled fiber depend on one thing above all: a clean, continuous material flow. Bale wires that reach the pulper can cause ragger rope buildup, unplanned downtime, and costly repairs.

Cross Wrap automates bale dewiring and wire removal, so your line runs exactly as it should.

With more than 100 dewiring machines delivered to leading paper and plastic recyclers across Europe, North America, Australia, and beyond.

Proven. Reliable. Built to last.

Do these challenges sound familiar in your paper recycling plant?

When bale wires enter the pulper, they accumulate on the ragger rope. The buildup slows the process, demands frequent maintenance stops, and ties up your operators in work that should not be there in the first place. The longer it goes unchecked, the more it costs.

Cutting wires by hand from bales is physically demanding and genuinely dangerous work. Operators work close to heavy, tensioned bales, and the sharp ends of cut wires create genuine injury risk. There is a better way to handle this.

When bale opening is manual or uncontrolled, material does not flow steadily into the pulper. Irregular infeed means the rest of the process cannot run at full capacity either. From the moment bales arrive, the whole line performs only as well as the infeed allows.

Paper mills processing recycled fiber receive bales from many different suppliers. OCC, mixed paper, cardboard, waste paper, different sizes, different wire configurations, different densities. No two shifts look the same.

When bale handling relies on manual work or equipment that cannot adapt, that variety becomes a bottleneck. Operators must adjust their approach for each bale type, which slows the process and introduces inconsistency into the material flow. The rest of the line can only perform as steadily as the infeed allows.

Safer, more reliable process

What does automated handling for paper recycling solve?

Full wire removal or a ragger rope system, the outcome is the same: a cleaner pulper, fewer injuries, and a consistent material flow from the very first bale.

Our Bale Dewiring Machine automatically cuts, removes, and coils steel wires before any material reaches the pulper. The pulper stays clean, protected, and running.

Automated dewiring removes one of the most hazardous manual tasks from the line. Operators move to safer roles, exposure to sharp wires is eliminated, and the process runs without the physical risks of hand cutting.

When bale opening is automated, infeed is steady. A consistent, controlled feed to the pulper means the downstream process can run at full capacity, shift after shift.

Automated dewiring also means that fewer people tied to a single repetitive task. Your team can focus on higher-value work, and your operation gets more output from the same headcount.

When wires are removed before the pulper, they cannot cause ragger rope buildup or damage downstream equipment. Maintenance becomes planned rather than reactive. No unexpected repair bills, no unplanned stops that take the line down at the worst possible time. Your team stays focused on running the process, not fixing it.

OCC, mixed paper, cardboard. One-sided wire ties or cross-wired. Different bale sizes and weights. Our machines are built to handle the variety that comes with recycled fiber, without manual adjustments or interruptions.

Up to 60 bales per hour. Fully automated wire cutting, removal, and coiling in a single step.

How does automated bale dewiring work in a paper recycling plant?

Some pulpers need wires removed completely. Others work with wires entering the process. Cross Wrap has a solution for both: the Dewiring Machine for full removal, and the Wire Cutter for mills that keep wires in the flow. You choose what fits your process.

“Our horizontal wire removal method is unique to Cross Wrap and consistently delivers a higher removal rate than alternative approaches.“

The Bale Dewiring Machine is ideal for paper and OCC bales. It automatically cuts, removes, and neatly coils steel wires before material reaches the pulper – helping avoid frequent shutdowns and pulper damage.

For facilities that only need to cut wires, our Bale Wire Cutterscan be easily integrated on your stock preparation line, boosting production and keeping material moving smoothly and safely.

In addition to Dewiring and Cutters, Cross Wrap leads the market in Bale Wrappers and Bale Openers, which are essential tools for storing and transporting including pulper rejects and other side streams.

Proven in the paper recycling plant

“We saw the improvements for our process straight away when we started to use the Dewiring Machine.” Ruud Rijks, Production Coordinator, Papierfabriek Doetinchem BV.

With the Cross Wrap solution, now there is less work needed in stock preparation, and the removed bale wires are much easier to store and handle.

FAQ: Paper recycling machines

The payback period depends on your current setup, shift structure, and labour costs. Mills that move from manual wire cutting to automated dewiring typically see savings from reduced labour, lower maintenance costs, and fewer unplanned stops. Our team can help you calculate the numbers for your specific operation.

The machine handles OCC, recovered paper, cardboard, and mixed paper bales. Both horizontally wired and cross-wired bales can be processed automatically. Bale sizes and weights vary widely in recycled paper processing, and the machine adapts to that variation without manual adjustments between bales.

Some pulper designs work with wires entering the material flow. For these mills, we offer the Bale Wire Cutter, which cuts wires without removing them. It is a simpler, more affordable solution that integrates into the stock preparation line and keeps material moving safely. Both options are available, and we help you choose what fits your process.

The Dewiring Machine coils removed steel wires into compact bundles automatically. Coiled wire takes up less space than loose wire and is easy to recycle.

Typically one forklift operator is enough to load bales onto the infeed conveyor. The dewiring process itself is fully automated. Smart sensors detect bale size and weight (with an add-on) without manual input, and the machine can be remotely monitored by the same operator during loading.

The Dewiring Machine is designed for continuous industrial operation. When waiting for the next bale, it automatically switches to standby and turns off the hydraulics, which also makes it energy efficient with an average energy use of 25 kWh while running.

Yes, integration with existing control systems is possible. The machine can also be operated and monitored remotely. Our team works through the technical requirements with you during the project planning phase to ensure a smooth integration.

The machine is modular and can be configured to fit a wide range of existing line layouts. Height, conveyor length, and additional features such as bale weighing and loading support can all be customized. Everything outside the safety fences can be tailored to your setup.

Cross Wrap supports your paper recycling equipment throughout its full operational life. That means OEM spare parts, upgrades and modernizations, service contracts, remote diagnostics, and on-site audits.

Local service partners are available in the UK, Norway, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Chile, and the USA.
