Waste management in Iceland faced a significant change from the open-pit burning method and landfilling in the 70s to the modern and environmentally sound management of waste, including material recycling, composting, and incineration with energy recovery. All activities concerning waste management are subject to environmental permits, and all generated waste needs to be transferred to collection points or waste reception facilities where it receives environmentally sound treatment.

Iceland has over 376,000 inhabitants who live on the island of 103.000 km2. The entire Greater Reykjavík region has 228,231 inhabitants. Iceland is the second-largest island in Europe, near the Arctic Circle, between Greenland and Norway. The most densely populated area, the capital area, had already induced problems in waste disposal that had to be dealt with. Like many other island states, Iceland’s municipal decision-makers are looking into the future and following the global waste management trend, heading towards a circular economy with only a little need for landfilling.

SORPA was designated to tackle the waste disposal problem and chose the Cross Wrap Bale Wrapper as a safer and more agile material handling than loose waste handling.

Since 1991, The City of Reykjavík and five other municipalities have coordinated their solid waste disposal through an independent firm named SORPA, which these six municipalities jointly own and run. SORPA was designated to tackle the waste disposal problem and chose the Cross Wrap Bale Wrapper as a safer and more agile material handling than loose waste handling. “This is the trend-setter example of the action from Iceland´s municipality on an issue in the area. It is also one of the most gorgeous wrapping lines in my sales performance career”, tells Ville-Pekka Parkkinen, Sales Manager at Cross Wrap.

The 31-meter wrapping line is a trend-setter in waste management.

The 31 meters long wrapping line’s installation and commissioning have been successfully completed by Cross Wrap’s engineer Nikke Tick in spring 2022. “Before, the waste was sent to a landfill, and now the customer needs to turn the waste into a product that is sent abroad as a fuel for power plants since there currently is no Waste-to-Energy power plant in operation in Iceland. During the project’s planning stage, we had a lot of interaction with the customer on both sides, and we carefully agreed on all the preparations, responsibilities, and schedules. As a result of collaboration and great teamwork, we completed the installation and commissioning of the wrapping line”, Nikke comments.
