Make profit from reject and stop landfilling

Industrial by-products and reject materials are an asset when they are handled correctly. Landfilling is not an environmentally friendly method and it is one of the biggest influencers to climate change. Today there are many good alternative ways to handle reject material streams to get the most out of them and to operate sustainably. We at Cross Wrap have been involved in creating solutions to boost industrial by-product and reject material reuse.

Reject wrapping solutions since 1997

Crosswrapping industrial by-products started in 1997 when one of the world’s largest and most modern Finnish paper mills wanted to get profit from their reject material and start to operate by the zero-landfill principal. This problem was solved by starting cross wrapping bales and storing the reject material for future usage. The wrapping method enabled the paper mill to store over 100 000 tons of reject material on-site with good weather protection for several years. Since that, they have been able to use the wrapped reject material as an energy source to run their mill.

This reject material handling system has evolved during the mill’s lifetime to offer efficient energy storage, which can buffer a vast amount of sustainable energy to be used whenever it is needed. One of the benefits of energy-storing is to be able to compensate for outsourced energy prices and availability.

Nowadays using reject material is getting more popular due to the need for higher efficiency and more sustainable operations. Also, higher landfill tipping fees and environmental legislation are pushing paper mills to evaluate their current operations to be more sustainable and independent. Today the by-products and reject materials are a valuable energy and recycling material source. Most of the industry´s leading companies are promoting sustainability and ecological efficiency, so reject wrapping is a possibility to develop the operating model further.

Evolution of the wrapping machine

Cross Wrap has always offered solutions that provide clear benefits to customers. One of these innovations has been the CW Direct Wrapper, which has the same DNA as Cross Wrap´s legendary waste industry workhorse, the CW2200 Bale Wrapper.

The CW Direct Wrapper was engineered to help our customer to bale and wrap materials with no bale wires or tying. The Direct wrapper is a very compact solution, that can be coupled with any two-ram baler on the market. The CW Direct Wrapper not only eliminates the need for bale tying, but it enables baling and wrapping materials such as pulp, fibers, insulation materials, hard plastics, etc. It helps to create a compact baling and wrapping line with no littering. The wrapper has lately developed also to an easy to move around mobile machine engineered for changing operating sites.

Cross wrapping benefits for reject material handling:

  • Improved logistics
  • Saves space in production, transport, and storing
  • Makes the storing possible without environmental impacts – no leakage, no odors, no loose material, and no insects or birds to worry about
  • Clean wrapping process
  • Automatic and simple operation
  • Helps to maintain better material calorific value
  • Lowered risk of fire
  • Cross Wrap operation is gentle to bales
  • Bale shape maintains in form during the wrapping
  • Wrapped bales are easy to store

The solution for bale opening

Our clients requested a solution for bale opening after perfect cross wrapping. For this operation, we developed a CW Bale Opener machine, which opens both rectangular and round bales. It opens the bales and removes the wrapping material and bale ties away from the baled material.

The CW Bale Opener uses less energy than any other method available. The CW Bale Opener´s process makes less dust, is fire safe, faster, and quieter compared to any competitors’ machines on the market. Also, the CW Bale Opener´s maintenance is much simpler and more cost-effective when compared to other opening techniques.

CW Bale Openers have been delivered to Waste-to-Energy plants and cement mills, where they are used 24/7. This experience in both wrapping and opening baled material gives us a good insight into the best practices, which can really make a difference in reject material handling.

Final words

I want to encourage all industry operators to get in touch with us to find the best way to handle reject materials environmentally friendly. We at Cross Wrap have solutions for you – let us help you to make more profit and save the environment.
